The CMS topic is certainly important, and I'd love to see more detailed evaluations. Thanks for the 10K foot view though.

I did find one thing disppointing though, which is that the article only explores the DIY/cost-savings model of adopting an open source solution. I think that at leat acknowledging the philosophical reasons for possibly adopting FOSS would be worthwhile.

More importantly, recognizing the advantages of using a consultant or even an ASP to build/host an open-source CMS is one that I think should get a lot more attention. You get the advantages (but cost) of not relying exclusively on existing staff, while also avoiding some of the major problems of vendor lock-in inherent in custom or proprietary tools. For roughly the same amount as you could spend on a proprietary solution, you could also pay somebody to build you a really nice Plone or Joomla site (and have it hosted by a third party), and if the designer or host goes out of business, it's not so terrible. Sink a load of cash into your Kintera, CitySoft, etc site, and if they (God forbid) go out of business, you'll be fortunate to even have your content in any kind of useable content.

Can anyone tell me about these petition resources:
- thepetitionsite.com
- ipetitions.com
- pledgebank.com
- petitions.pm.gov.uk
- hearfromyourmp.com
- netaction.org

Questions:
1. Have you used them? How well do they work? Are they free for nonprofits?
2. Which petition sites work best internationally? Or, by necessity, are there separate sites for each country?
3. Which petition sites have the best "population" in terms of their site providing additional visibility for your petition among their audience?
4. Is there anyone consolidating or aggregating similar petitions? Is one large petition better than multiple small petitions?

Inquiring minds want to know.
Thank you for your help!
Jill
