Entango

Vendor Site: www.entango.com
Example Client: Museum of Glass

Entango is a useful and reliable service with strong online reports. However, it is limited by the appearance of the donation form and prominent Entango branding throughout the donation process. Organizations must pay extra setup costs to add custom fields. For most organizations, there are better options.

Fees and Transaction Costs
Setup Fees:
High Fees When Few Donations: Medium Fees When Many Donations: High

  • The $500 setup fee includes incorporating the donation form into the navigation of the site. eCheck processing requires an additional $100 setup fee; custom fields additions are billed at $150/hour
  • If the organization uses the Entango merchant account, they are charged 8% of each donation
  • If the organization uses their own merchant account, Entango charges 5% of each donation with a $20 monthly minimum fee. In this case the organization is also charged fees by their merchant account, typically ranging from about 3.3% per transaction to $50/month and 2.1% per transaction. Entango’s fees include the payment gateway fees
  • eChecks are charged separately at 5% per donation with a minimum fee of $1 per donation
  • If an organization would like to be able to accept credit cards issued by banks outside the US and Canada, there is an additional fee of $50 per month

Merchant Account: Either

  • Organization can use their own merchant account, but typically they use Entango’s
  • If using Entango’s merchant account, the charge will show up on the donor’s credit card as made to “Nonprofit Trans:” followed by the organization’s name

Company Background: Excellent

  • Private company that offers donation, registration, membership and renewal services, email management tools and product sales services to 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4), and 501(c)6 nonprofits
  • They report that the company is profitable, and the online payment functionality is self-supporting
  • They started processing online payments in 1999, and have more than 350 clients

Setup and Support: Excellent

  • Entango will setup the donation form based on the organization’s needs
  • If the client wants to make changes after the initial setup, Entango will do two re-integrations of the Donation Form per year for free
  • They offer phone and email support, both prominently featured on their administrative interface
  • A consulting firm that has worked with Entango on several occasions reports that their customer service is responsive and helpful

Donation Form Appearance: Good

  • The donation form is completely tailored to the website, including the navigation, colors, and fonts
  • Their standard form is functional but not as clean and professionally designed as that of some of the other tools, and includes a large, mandatory Entango logo at the bottom
  • The donor is shown a receipt online, and a follow-up email is sent inviting them to login to the “My Entango” site to view and print their receipt if desired. This email can be suppressed, but it is not possible to just send an email with the receipt information

Donation Form Flexibility: Excellent

  • Their standard form supports enewsletter sign-ups and tribute gifts
  • Any custom fields can be added for an additional charge of $150/hr

Payment Processing: Good

  • They commonly process Visa, Master Card, and American Express and Discover, and can accommodate other cards available through the organization’s merchant account
  • For an additional $50/month, they can process credit cards issued by banks outside North America
  • They handle recurring donations as part of their standard package
  • They handle eChecks for an additional fee
  • Fraud prevention is a strength – they do a number of automatic and manual checks to try to flag and investigate anomalies
  • They went down for about five hours under the burden of Katrina donations, but now have an improved and more redundant infrastructure

Reports & Data: Good

  • A web-based administrative interface allows organizations to view donor information and filter by geography, type of credit card, etc
  • The administration tool is intuitive, user friendly and sophisticated.
  • Organizations can compare donations from one month to another or one year to another using reports and graphs.
  • The data can be downloaded into a CSV text file; no customization of this file is available
  • Entango does not offer any method to access data programmatically that would allow a programmer to build an automated feed to another database

Money Distribution: Good

  • Money is deposited directly into the organization’s bank account once a month if they are using the Entango merchant account
  • If the organization is using their own merchant account, money will be deposited directly into the organization’s account within a few days after donation

The guy who answered the phone at Entango on May 17, 2006 told me that the setup fee is only $60.

But this review prompted me to search their web site, and documents on their web site say that the setup fee is $600:

(click on either the PDF or Word format "overview" link)

I assume that the guy on the phone told me the truth, but if anyone knows differently, I'd be grateful for a phone call or email:
