WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, and Plone: Comparing Open Source CMSs for Nonprofits

Our deadline for listings and sponsorshps has past - we are no longer accepting listings.  But keep an eye out for the report in March!

Idealware is working on a comprehensive comparison of WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, and Plone for the nonprofit sector. In the same vein as our Online Donation and Grants Management reports, this Open Source CMSs for Nonprofits report will apply rigorous qualitative research techniques to understand the features that are important to nonprofits in Content Management Systems, do a detailed, feature by feature comparison of the systems, and then summarize up our findings into an easy-to-understand analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of each platform for typical nonprofit needs.

Michelle Murrain, a consultant who helps nonprofits select between CMSs options and the founder of the Nonprofit Open Source initiative, will be the lead researcher for the report. The report will follow a similar format as our Consumers Guide to Grants Management Systems or Getting Started with Blogging Software reports. The report is scheduled for distribution around March 1st, 2008.

This report will build on the strong traffic and reputation Idealware already has in open source content management system area. Our article comparing Joomla, Drupal, and Plone gets more than 2000 unique page views per month, and is in the top four Google search results for any combination of the three platform names (i.e. "Joomla Drupal", or "Drupal Plone"). We will strongly promote the new report from this older article, throughout the nonprofit technology community, and to our opt-in list of almost 7000 people (of this list, 71% help nonprofits with technology decisions, 67% are with nonprofits with an annual budget of more than $500K, and 36% are with organizations with a budget of more than $2 Million).

The report will include both a consultant directory and sponsorship opportunities, and we'd love to include you.

List Your Services in the Consultant Directory

The nonprofit community is eager for a directory of consultants that can provide services for WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, or Plone. Through a listing in our directory, included in the back of the PDF report, you can ensure the community knows about the services you offer (view a mockup of the Consultant Directory)

To make the directory accessible to small as well as large providers, the price for a listing is based on a sliding scale. We define a Small Firm as individuals or firms who earn less than $100K in annual revenue, Medium Firms as earning between $100K-500K in annual revenue, and Large Firms as those earning more than $500K in revenue.
