Debra Askanase worked in nonprofit organizations in the greater Boston area for 20 years. While at various anit-poverty agencies, she learned the art of community organizing. She served as the first executive director of the Hyde/Jackson Square Main Street Program, and the Economic Development Director of a regional community development corporation, Salem Harbor CDC. In-between, she spent time in Nicaragua working for Potters for Peace. Debra believes in bringing the principles of community-based organizing forward into every workplace: developing leadership from within, transparency, movement-building, and bringing people together to create change.In 2007, Debra and her family moved to Jerusalem, Israel, where she completed an M.B.A. in International Business from Bar Ilan University and subsequently opened a social media communications consulting firm. Her firm, Community Organizer 2.0, works with clients to create customized social media strategies, solutions, training, and campaigns to help nonprofits and businesses achieve their goals.
