President, Design Database Associations
Boston, MassachussetsSteve Backman has close to thirty years experience with software development and technology strategy. Working in corporate software development in the 1980s, Steve was intrigued by emerging standards for designing cost-effective and forward-looking database systems. Steve launched Database Designs in 1989 to bring emerging new perspectives to nonprofit and public sector organizational processes. He has chosen to keep the company small, independent, and focused on providing select clients comprehensive support for unique and creative solutions to strategic challenges.
The consulting group prides itself on being platform independent, working with both the latest Microsoft .Net web technologies as well as Drupal and other Open Source environments. And the approach is to blend and integrate available, popular off-the-shelf commercial and Open Source systems with independently developed tools and techniques.
With liberal arts degrees from Harvard and Yale, Steve turned to political activism in Boston grass roots causes in the 1970s. He has been a long time activist on education reform, including serving as co-chair of Boston’s Citywide Parent Council and taking part in other public school issues, and he has been active in a range of social justice causes. He brings this activist orientation to his consulting with nonprofits, community and labor organizations as well as his writing for and speaking at technology forums.
These diverse perspectives attracted Steve to Idealware, because of its independent, straightforward views of software and technology, and he looks forward to contributing to it in this way.
